You spend a lot more time with AI than you think.

If you don’t live under a rock, there is a 99.9 percent chance you have heard of artificial intelligence. It is the Big Data at this stage in its development.
There are great AI benefits and risks as well it’s a hot topic across science, entertainment, and technology. But did you know there are different types of artificial intelligence? And we live with some of these AI’s on a regular basis.
What Is Artificial Intelligence?
Deeply intertwined in our digital world, artificial intelligence passes through our everyday lives like a passing wind. As John McCarthy, who coined the term “Artificial Intelligence,” said “as soon as it works, no one calls it AI anymore."
Artificial Intelligence permeates our lives from Amazon’s personalization algorithms to the control system in your car. There are many ways AI can benefit your life and there are also ways it can challenge you in to be in undiscovered ways.
But what exactly is AI? The exact definition can be hard to pin down and experts still are wishy-washy about the exact definition of intelligence, let alone artificial intelligence.
Generally, you can define artificial intelligence as any non-living thing (machines) that exhibits any kind of thinking power.
Narrow Artificial Intelligence
The AI that we currently know and love is defined as narrow AI. Narrow AI works within a very limited context; strong AI works within a broad context.
Really, all Narrow AI is good at is performing basic, one-function tasks. Some common functions of Narrow AI are speech, motor functions, voice recognition, or computing.
When you get something more complex, like your voice-recognition digital assistant, that’s the result of several Narrow AI’s working in conjunction with each other.
Natural intelligence, thinking power created by living beings (humans), far outweighs that of any kind of artificial intelligence that exists now.
General Artificial Intelligence
Artificial Intelligence predictions are fluid but General Artificial Intelligence is what scientists’ dreams and sci-fi movies are made of. General Artificial Intelligence refers to a complete simulation of natural intelligence cognitive functions and processing.
With General Artificial Intelligence, a machine thinks and feels exactly like a human. Who are some famous General AI’s? For one, there is Hal from 2001: Space Odyssey. Terminators from the Hollywood blockbuster Terminator series. Blade Runner features human-like androids called replicants. Even round, cuddly Baymax from Big Hero 6 is General AI.
We have yet to see General AI because we actually don’t know a lot about the human brain itself. The development of General AI is also a sign that we understand the human brain much better, too.
Word Up:
As long as Artificial Intelligence captures mankind’s imagination, AI will continue to develop, evolve, and grow. We can even say our collective fascination with AI stems from a desire to understand ourselves better. Artificial Intelligence is, after all, merely a simulation of what it means to be human.
