It can be easy to take the internet for granted. Click here. Type that. Push a button or two. In a misleading way, it seems what we do online goes into a black void of ones and zeroes never to be heard from again.
Little do many people know, what you are doing online actually matters. What you do online matters so much that giant online corporations collect and track you online to datamine your online content.
Empowerment Benefits
Basically, it’s like you are an A-list celebrity and Google is a team of rabid paparazzi stalkers taking sneaky photos of you from the bushes and digging through your trashcan for any shred of personal information.
But instead of you receiving the benefits of your A-list celebrity hard work...guess who does? The ones that took your data!
You do the work (create online content) and the paparazzi that harasses you (i.e. Google, Apple, etc.) :( receives all. This is the messed up state of the internet as it exists today.
We Can Change The Internet
The sad part is, people accept how the internet works today as a natural fact. Like the weather or the fact that time passes.
It’s important to keep in mind though, the internet is a man-made place/ environment/ ecosystem. The internet is a cultural byproduct. Culture (man-made) is the opposite of what is natural (the weather).
Culture can be changed, molded, and perceived differently precisely because, well, we made it. A simple example of the fickle nature of culture? Look to any fashion trend throughout the years and you will get the idea.
On a more serious note, another example is with the civil rights movement and how people of different backgrounds are treated by society. We can all agree it has, as a whole, changed for the better. But the change did not come about through humans evolving a third eyeball or something (nature). The change came from challenging pre-conceived notions of what it means to be human.
