Now that we’re going to be spending a lot of time conversing with chatbots, they may as well be funny and entertaining, right? A great idea. But getting to that level involves some subtle challenges.

How Funny Is Too Funny For A Chatbot?

Playfulness is what breaks down barriers, builds trust, and opens up friendliness.

But your sense of humor and my sense of humor can be totally different.

Throw in a chatbot who barely knows emotional intelligence, timing, and context and we realize a chatbot may not be the best choice to poke fun with customers.

The Three Conversation Types

To sidestep the awkward puns situation, find out which of these three conversation types your brand falls within. Then you can pretty much safely stay in that conversation zone.

Serious Zone: conversations like fraud alerts, tech support, most customer service inquiries. People have serious questions and want serious answers. No funny business here.

Smart-Casual Zone: this includes conversations like checking a flight status, account inquiries, and weather updates. Some silliness okay here.

Fun Zone: conversations we love like ordering a pizza, shopping, or booking a vacation. Loosen up and let the jokes fly. Stakes are low so anything goes when it comes to humor.

Word Up:

Chatbots are pretty good at learning human language and mimicking how we talk. But until they can also learn some emotional intelligence, they will sound pretty...well, robotic.
