It’s funny how tech lingo of the past becomes the everyday speech of today. Ask someone a few years ago what Wifi is, and they may ask you to translate that into English with a confused look on their face. To get ahead of the curve, we’ve curated the terms we project will have the most impact on the future of content and the digital future.
Marketing automation refers to software platforms and technologies designed for marketing departments and organizations to more effectively market on multiple channels online (such as email, social media, websites, etc.) and automate repetitive tasks.
Marketing automation is a platform that marketers use to plan, coordinate, manage and measure all of their marketing campaigns, both online and offline.
Content is anything and everything you do online.
Content is information (practical, functional, tactile)
Content is experience (useful, purposeful, outcome oriented)
Media-based (simulates traditional forms of media like photographs, film, and text)
Activity-based (content created from actions you do online like watch a video, open an email, etc.
Customization & Personalization
Customization and personalization tend to be used interchangeably. But they actually describe two different processes and are not synonyms. At their core, both customization and personalization are processes that tailor a unique experience.
They differ when it comes down to who alters the experience. Customization “is usually done by the user manually making changes to get the experience that’s best for them.” Personalization, on the other hand, “can be achieved through customer data and predictive tech.”
In other words, customization is what you do - your “natural intelligence.” Personalization is what the site or system does - “Artificial Intelligence.”
“An influencer is an individual who has the power to affect purchase decisions of others because of his/her authority, knowledge, position or relationship with his/her audience. Influencers in social media are people who have built a reputation for their knowledge and expertise on a particular topic. Brands love social media influencers because they can create trends and encourage their followers to buy products they promote.”

Content marketing is a feature of organic social media marketing that can help you gain visibility across social networks. Social currency describes the resources and abilities created and accessible through presence in offline or online networks and communities. Social currency is derived from social capital theory, developed by the late French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, which is concerned with the benefits available from positive cooperation between groups and communities. Both theories are underlined by the belief that value can be derived from social participation.
Social currency is often used nowadays to refer to an individual’s online influence and access to influencers, derived from their presence on social media sites such as LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook. The term has become more popular because tracking tools, analytics and other technologies make it easier to track and compare social currency. Within internet marketing, social currency is used to measure the credibility and clout of a brand’s digital presence.
“To most, organic traffic consists of visits from search engines, while direct traffic is made up of visits from people entering your company URL into their browser. Beyond organic and direct traffic, you must understand the difference between all of your traffic sources.
A breakdown [includes, but is not limited to]:
Social (Traffic from a social network, such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, or Instagram)
Organic (Traffic from search engine results that is earned, not paid)
Paid search (Traffic from search engine results that is the result of paid advertising via Google AdWords or another paid search platform)
Traffic data is a great way to take the temperature of your website and marketing initiatives.”
“Virtual Reality (VR) is the use of computer technology to create a simulated environment. Unlike traditional user interfaces, VR places the user inside an experience. By simulating as many senses as possible, such as vision, hearing, touch, even smell, the computer is transformed into a gatekeeper to this artificial world.”
