7 Wonderful Ways Travel Makes You A Better Person

There’s a great big wide world out there waiting to say “hello!”

The team here at Swomi Headquarters learned through our journey that the most important things in life are how we treat ourselves, how we treat other people, and our attitude towards life.

And traveling has taught us a thing or two about all three of those! Today we want to share our lessons about travel that we have learned through living the Content Lifestyle.

1. Changed Perspective On Life

This one is the most obvious and also the most profound. By experiencing new places, cultures, and people, you realize there is not just one way to do things or one way to think.

Suddenly, paths you would have never even fathomed are suddenly very real and tangible as options for you to pursue. Scientific studies have confirmed being physically far away also creates psychological distance.

And that psychological distance for your situation helps think about your problems more objectively to see your life more clearly.

2. Make New Relationships

Meeting new people is no doubt one of the most exciting times of your trip. Who can ever forget that time in Amsterdam when you randomly went out for drinks with that couple from Poland?

To truly benefit from all the new location has to offer you, live abroad instead of just taking a short one-week trip. The key is to try to understand the world through a local’s perspective. What do you think is the mindset of the town you live in compared to somewhere you have traveled?

3. Deepen Existing Relationships

They say if you really want to get to know someone, travel with them. Traveling with a friend, family, or a partner shows you how someone reacts when faced with new, unfamiliar experiences.

Even if that new, unfamiliar experience is just choosing what to order for Breakfast from a Peruvian restaurant. Do they have fun trying something new?

Or do they become frustrated they can’t read Spanish? Maybe they don’t even care what they eat and are just excited for your day-hike.

4. Step Back From Life

“Traveling abroad makes people have a more nuanced understanding of themselves, while at the same time they also have a better sense of who they are.”

In addition to changing our perspective about life, travel can help us change our perspective about ourselves. We don’t truly know how we will react until we are in that scenario. We would all like to think we would help someone in need. But what if helping that person entailed you risking your own life? By reflecting on our actions, we can see where our character can be improved.

5. Be More Creative

When you don’t have the same luxuries and conveniences you have at home, you’re forced to come up with solutions that are novel and effective.

Accidentally locked yourself out of your suitcase and only have a spoon? (One of the beauties of travel is it’s randomness). You are more creative than you think!

Being creative is essentially being a problem solver. On the road, anything can happen. So it’s good to have your creative cap always on!

6. Achieve Peak Mindfulness

A mindful person fully lives in the moment, letting things unfold without judgment.

How to be mindful? Be fully aware of what is happening in the present.

Many times, our minds are worrying about the future or ruminating about the past. Everything is new when we travel so our awareness is at an optimum high simply because we are having fun taking in our new environment.

7. Be Humbled

Visit a better country, and you learn how to improve your own. Visit a less fortunate country, and you learn to appreciate what you have.

Awareness and appreciation for what we have humbles us – we gracefully acknowledge and accept our limitations and see ourselves equally with other people.

Going on a 24-hour plane ride, seeing crowd after crowd of faces, and meeting those who are happy with way less than what we have shows just how small we are in the grand scheme of things.
