2019 – The Year Of Inventions, Innovations, Progress, And Ideas

5G networks, ethical AI, brain-to-Brain networks and more enter the scene.

This article is letter (I) of our “Trending Topics" series where we write an article for each letter of the phrase. “Trending Topics" looks at what's the hottest, latest, and greatest for the coming new year and beyond. Find links to more articles in the series below.

It’s all about inventions, innovations, and progress of ideas, systems, gadgets, and lifestyles.

The year 2019 will leave an unforgettable impact with its advanced inventions, innovative ideas, and its progressive digital infrastructure.

From 5G networks behind your phone’s foldable screen to ushering in the age of truthful consumerism, these trending inventions are like peeking into the future.

1. Foldable Screens
Foldable Screens

We love the mobility smartphones give us. But it can be a bummer when you can’t enjoy your smartphone’s high quality display on that teeny tiny screen. How can mobility be combined with a decent viewing experience? It’s a common conundrum.

No worries, we live in the future. And foldable screens are here! Samsung and Huawei have been teasing the idea of releasing a foldable smartphone since 2013.

Now Samsung has unveiled its version of the foldable smartphone. They call their foldable smartphone technology the Infinity Flex Display. It can run three apps at once, fold out to a 7.3 inch tablet display, and fold into a candybar-like form that can make calls.

2. AI Becomes Smarter

Artificial Intelligence is already well, intelligent enough to be running many digital devices behind the scenes. AI will only continue to make breakthroughs as they learn from the vast amounts of data created every day. But there have been limitations because only narrow AI exists so far (AI that can only do simple tasked-based functions).

The end of 2019 won’t see fully functional general AI, but Narrow AI will be a lot more common. You won’t have a self-driving car parked in your driveway just yet.

The integration of narrow AI will be slow one. This looks like AI improving cybersecurity, doing better data analysis, and automating a few more repetitive human tasks.

3. Ethical AI
Ethical AI

Just because AI knows a thing or two doesn’t mean smarty pants AI can’t do whatever it wants. When a study asked 27,000 consumers in eight markets their opinion, 97% of them said they now expect brands to use technology ethically.

Many people are...

a) outraged where their data ends up

b) resent tech giants for fueling negative social impacts

c) frustrated over tech’s over-promising and under-delivering

As a result, people demand ethical AI and algorithms that deliver fair and unbiased decisions. AI and algorithms decide a disproportionate amount of important decisions in our lives.

So it wasn’t pretty news to hear facial recognition software was proven to be significantly more reliable on white male faces. Or hearing that Amazon’s algorithmically-fueled hiring tool was biased towards women.

4. Brain-To-Brain Networks
Brain To Brain Networks

This next invention will leave you happy we have Ethical AI. Brain-to-brain networks allow you to communicate via thoughts. At this point in time, up to three people can be connected to this network.

More of a first stage experiment rather than dystopian mind control, participants test the brain network by collaboratively playing a Tetris-style game.

The network itself relies on recording brain electrical activity, sending and receiving only simple “bits” data at a time, and flashing LED’s at different frequencies for participants to focus on. We’re not at telepathy levels quite yet.

5. 5G Networks
5G Networks

News of 5G networks has been on the horizon for a while now. And for good reason. 5G is the most obvious technology to follow for 2019 because 5G is a necessary technology. Without it, technologies such as autonomous vehicles, drones, the Internet of Things, and supercomputers couldn’t exist.

5G technology will improve processing speeds by more than ten times and can handle 1,000 times more traffic than what exists now.

In the US, Verizon offers Motorola phones that access 5G through snap-on modules. AT&T committed to offering a Samsung phone with built-in 5G in the second half of 2019.

6. Blockchain Technology
Blockchain Technology

Blockchain… possibly the most excessively talked about invention on this list. That’s thanks to blockchain’s most popular incarnation, Bitcoin.

Bitcoin hype aside, 2019 will see blockchain technology used in large-scale corporate affairs. That’s because blockchains are a fantastic way to keep track of information and streamline complex interactions.

Anywhere a large amount of transactional data exists, blockchain’s flexiblity can help. That would be sectors like finance, supply chains, media rights management, the Internet of Things, and identity verification to just name a few.

The most innovative companies will use Blockchain as a way to improve collaboration.

7. Fantasy IRL
Fantasy IRL

Virtual and augmented reality make it all too easy to bring escapist fantasies IRL. Mankind has always sought escapism from telling stories around a campfire to losing themselves in a movie. Increasing political, economic, and social turbulence in the “real world” has many people in need of a break.

Fortunately, there are more media channels to escape from reality than ever before. It is the best of times, and the worst of times.

AR and VR is one of the most recent mediums. It’s still seen as mostly a gaming platform, but it’s also gaining use in education, training, and marketing spheres. As the tech is improves, prices come down, and more practical applications emerge we will see a lot more fully-immersive fantasylands.

8. VR & AR Keep It Real
VR & AR Keep It Real

Augmented reality and virtual reality don’t have to only be for escapism. AR and VR can help practice real life skills. That’s the great thing about an invention, it has the flexibility to go in many directions. Conventional ideas have yet to bog down its potential uses.

The augmented reality software, Winning Friends, will give you real-time updates about your audience and then give you tips to make your presentation the best it can be. Tips are direct and actionable like when to smile and when to project your voice.

9. Quantum Computers
Quantum Computers

Quantum computers sound like they’re from the year 2190, but alas, they are here with us in the measly year of 2019. Quantum computers are the latest evolution in computing. True to their name, quantum computers use quantum mechanics.

As explained by Wikipedia, “A classical computer has a memory made up of bits, where each bit is represented by either a one or a zero. A quantum computer, on the other hand, maintains a sequence of qubits, which can represent a one, a zero, or any quantum superposition of those two qubit states.”

In other words, quantum computers are incredibly powerful machines. They are designed to use laws of quantum mechanics to solve complex and fascinating laws of nature like untangling intricate molecular and chemical bonding structures.

10. Truthful Consumerism

This underlies all the others in this list. Without the truth, consumers will have a hard time engaging and trusting anything, invention or not.

What do we mean by truth? We mean reliable, instantly accessible, useful, and unbiased information. If your brand can do that, then people everywhere will be on your side.

As a brand, the only way to ensure your survival is to deliver authentic, meaningful value.

Key words to keep in mind? Transparency. Aspiration. Positive Impact. Tolerance. Empowerment.

And it’s not enough to talk the talk. To walk the walk, have a long-term plan to have a positive impact on the planet, society, and individuals.

Word Up:

What was your favorite invention? How can you see the future being shaped by any one of these innovations? What will your 2019 look like?
